UN-CSD

Forum results brought forward to the UN
To present the outcomes of the 5th World Water Forum's political process, and to highlight the commonalities with the United Nations' 3rd World Water Development Report (WWDR-3), which was published at the Forum, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkey and the World Water Council organized a side event during the 17th Session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development under the title "5th World Water Forum - Water Management Adaptation Strategies to Global Changes".

The side event was enriched by presentations from Olcay Ünver, UNESCO-WWAP Coordinator, on the findings of the WWDR-3 Report, Ger Bergkamp, Director General of the WWC, on the political impacts of the 5th World Water Forum, and Ambassador Sumru Noyan on the political messages from Istanbul. It concluded with a questions-and-answer session, during which participants supported the notion of the intergovernmental process around water being sharpened with the appropriate participation of the UN.

YOUTH AND CHILDREN'S WORLD WATER FORA
Involving the next generation in water matters
Underscoring the importance of involving the next generation in the solution of water issues, two fora were held in conjunction with the 5th World Water Forum, for children and youth. The Children's World Water Forum, held from March 12th to 17th, welcomed 135 children from 21 countries, who discussed and agreed on the Children's Declaration. More than 200 young people from all over the world who attended the Youth World Water Forum agreed on the Youth Declaration, which was read out during the Forum's closing ceremony.

PARTNERSHIP BAZAAR
Forming alliances through the Forum
Three events were held at the 5th World Water Forum under the aegis of the Partnership Bazaar, with the aim of supporting the set-up of new coalitions, facilitating alliances for existing ones, and sharing experiences to enhance productivity between water organizations. The events were scheduled on the first and last days of the Forum week with discussions on strengthening strategic operations; and another on promoting innovation exchange through technology and finance. Discussions include the future of water-user operations, enabling ecosystem-wide approaches, to exploring the opportunities for political advocacy in scaling MUS and building water stewardship initiative. The sessions introduced three developing initiatives and garnered attentions from external news sources. As a project initiated at the 5th Forum in Istanbul, the Partnership event drew interests from organizations that looked to the WWC to promote a platform for continuous dialogue and facilitate effective partnerships. GREEN STEPS AWARD
Istanbul Hotels Recognised for their 'Green Steps'
The top hotels in Istanbul in four categories (5 star, 4 star, 3 star and boutique) were awarded the "Green Steps Award" in recognition of their efforts to "green" their operations. The Green Forum Initizative's "Hotel Greening Project" was developed with the international auditing company, Bureau Veritas and the Touristic Hotel's & Investor's Association (TUROB) to help reduce the environmental impacts of hotels in Istanbul during and after the 5th World Water Forum. Twenty-two hotels voluntarily participated in the pilot project and completed a "Hotel Greening Audit" based on a checklist covering different aspects of hotel operations. The Hotel Greening Audits and the hotel's best practices were recorded and a ranking was made to establish the Green Steps Award winners. WHAT PEOPLE SAY
Alison Bartle
Managing Director of Aquamedia International and winner of the Turkish Republic Prime Minister's Water Prize
"The Forum was a big success, and it was a great honour for me to win the Turkish Prime Minister's Water Prize, for communication about water issues. Raising awareness of the socio-economic benefits of water resources projects is important through all the media today."
Maritza Aurora Morales Casanova
President and Founder of HUNAB Proyecto de Vida AC, Mexico
"The Children's World Water Forum is an excellent platform to share children's activities for water, but there should be a follow-up mechanism for participating children to continue to be involved, and to present the results of their work at the next Forum. We are committed to suppporting the continuity in the activities of children in our region, and involving more Mexican children who are committed to preserving natural resources, including water."
SPEAKER'S CORNER

An open avenue for expression

The Speaker'a Corner was an open space in the Forum for any participant or group of participants that wanted to promote their water-related activities, share new and innovative techniques, or just give their opinion on any given subject. A quarter of the space was booked up in advance through a form on the VMS, and the rest was available for participants to sign up during the Forum week. In total, 27 presentations from 16 countries were made during the week under the aegis of the Speaker's Corner, over the two venues, ranging from Mexican school kids presenting on aquaculture and aquaponics to studies on the genetic improvement of drought tolerance in fruit crops from Egypt. This component provided a lively and more relaxed means of information sharing and exchange of ideas between participants. Please click here for more details on the events.
ARTS AND CULTURE

Shedding a different light on water
Istanbul, as the host city of the 5th World Water Forum, has a unique nature and history which harbour great resources. By preparing the Artistic Events Programme, the Forum Secretariat hoped to introduce the native cultures which made this beautiful city the 2010 European Capital of Culture. It also tried to gather creative minds who use the theme of water to shed a different light on natural resources. As a metaphor, we chose the art of "Ebru", which uses water as a background, embracing the patterns of different colours flowing freely, yet permanently, for the reflection of Turkish culture.
